The challenge

A whole life in one site

Otto Pächt lived from 1902 to 1988. His work took him from Vienna to Berlin, Heidelberg, Dublin, London, Oxford, Princeton and New York, and back to Vienna. His writing fills a rich bibliography of 118 entries.

The site had to hold all of this and still feel light: clear for scholars, and open to anyone curious.

The idea

His life as a journey

His life was a real journey, across countries and academic milestones. So the site became one too.

Each important phase of his life is a station. You stop, explore and move on at your own pace. Twelve stations are grouped in four acts: origins, exile, homecoming and his life's work, and legacy.

The list of stations is always one tap away, so you never get lost on the way.

The identity

The eye before the word

Sight defined his life as a scholar. It was what he studied, and what he spent his life teaching: to look first, and to look closely. What better mark for him than the eyes that taught others to see?

And what he saw, he wrote. Decades of books, essays and lectures left a rich body of knowledge behind. What better way to carry his name than his own signature?

The details

Made to look closer

Each station holds more for those who want to look closer: further information and images that open seamlessly, then fold away to lead you on to the next station. The journey is never interrupted, and the ride stays smooth from start to finish.

Every publication, in one place

The bibliography runs from 1921 to 2017. You can search by title, journal, location or co-author, or narrow the list by decade.

Portraits and documents, up close

Photographs and documents open in a quiet viewer that keeps the page behind it in view, so you never feel you have left the station.

The result

Every detail was tuned to the same quiet note: the warmth of old paper, the calm of a library and the care of a man who taught the world to see. One station flows into the next, like a slow walk through a gallery. You never see the effort behind it; you only feel the harmony.
